A Printer’s Bronze

It’s been a while since I updated this blog. Thomia hasn’t quite sold out – we still have some copies left – but things have been rather quiet since March as I’ve been concentrating on finishing my next book, Cocktails by the Volcano. Meanwhile, I hear STC’s official 175th anniversary volume (‘coffee-table book’ as some like to call it) is doing quite well: heartiest congratulations to all those involved in that project,

Still, interesting things continue to happen with Thomia. My friend Daminda Wanigasekara at Softwave messaged me recently to let me know that, much to my surprise and delight, Thomia won a bronze award at this year’s National Print Excellence Awards, the ceremony having been held on the twentieth of last month. Since these awards are usually given for technical achievement, it’s not often you find a book without a single illustration in it among the winners. My sincere thanks and congratulations to Chanishka Colombage, the talented Book Designer, as well as to Daminda and his team at Softwave who made his vision a reality.

Meanwhile, the book remains on sale via this website and at selected bookshops in Colombo. If you haven’t purchased your copy of the work that is, as one reviewer perceptively noted, ‘ostensibly about S. Thomas’ College, [but] as much, or perhaps even more, a history of Sri Lanka’s failed promise.’ I’m sorry more people haven’t cottoned on to this aspect of the book; it was never intended just for Thomians, but for Lankans interested in learning about our national history from a non-communalist, inclusively Lankan perspective embracing all Lankans: that is, from a truly Thomian perspective.
